2016 CGU-CMOS Joint Scientific Congress in Frederiction, NB ~ by Janelle Laing

Members of our research group attended the joint Canadian Geophysical Union (CGU) and Canadian Meteorologic and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) annual scientific meeting held in Frederiction, NB, May 29 - June 2, 2016. We had the pleasure of starting off the week by attending the Young Hydrologists Workshop where young and experienced researchers, including our own Genevieve Ali, offered insights on challenges and opportunities for research in Canadian Hydrology and how young scientists might address these opportunities to maximize the impact of their careers. Over the course of the week we attended as many sessions as possible, which included sessions with poster presentations by Sam Bansah, Aminul Haque, Maliheh Rabie, Cody Ross, and myself (Janelle Laing). Genevieve Ali also delivered an engaging (invited) lecture titled "Linking phosphorous export dynamics to landscape heterogeneity and climatic variability: can c-Q relations help?".

Our group at the 2016 CGU-CMOS meeting

Our group will be sharing findings about new research in surface and vadose zone hydrology, ecohydrohydrology and water water quality dynamics... with a strong focus on the Prairies. If you will be in Fredericton, NB between May 29 and June 2, 2016 for the 50th CMOS Congress & joint CGU Annual Meeting, come talk to us! List of presentations below:

Our group at the AGU Fall Meeting 2013

Members of our group will be discussing Prairie hydrology and water quality dynamics at the upcoming Fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco. Halya Petzold and Amber Penner will present posters showing preliminary results associated with their Master's research projects while Genevieve Ali will give a talk about the dominant controls on downstream connectivity in Prairie watersheds. The titles and presentation times of those upcoming posters and talk can be found below.

Nomination to a US EPA Science Advisory Board panel

Genevieve Ali was recently invited to sit on the Environmental Protection Agency’s independent Science Advisory Board’s new Water Body Connectivity Report Advisory Panel. The EPA Science Advisory Board (SAB) was established by the US Congress in 1978 with the mandate to advise the Agency on technical matters, particularly to review the quality and relevance of the scientific and technical information used to inform the development of environmental regulations. Genevieve is one of 27 independent experts who will peer-review the EPA’s draft report entitled “Connectivity of Streams and Wetlands to Downstream Waters: A Review and Synthesis of the Scientific Evidence”. Genevieve’s SAB-related activities will involve participation in one or two teleconferences as well as a 3-day public meeting to be held in Washington D.C. in December 2013.
