New funding for wetland research

A research group led by Genevieve Ali and that includes David Lobb (U. Manitoba), Sheng Li (AAFC), Henry Wilson (AAFC) and Ducks Unlimited Canada has been awarded a research grant by the Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship (Water Stewardship Fund). The aim of the project is to establish scientific criteria to determine priority areas for wetland conservation and restoration. These criteria will be developed based on the topographic, hydrological and biogeochemical characteristics of different wetlands so as to take into account their ability to: (a) remain disconnected from waterways; (b) attenuate flood waves; and (c) retain excess nutrients. Mike Chiasson (MSc student) will join the group in January 2013 to work on that project.
